On 29 November 2018, the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LAS) held its annual Autumn General meeting. The meeting agenda traditionally includes awarding of the Grand Medal - the highest award of the Academy.

This year the award was conferred to Kalvis Torgāns, a professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia. Professor Torgāns was rewarded for the establishment of a modern civil rights school in Latvian jurisprudence and a significant contribution to the introduction of theoretical knowledge in practice. The professor received the cast bronze Grand Medal and the Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation prize as well.

The LAS Grand Medal is the highest award for Latvian and overseas scientists for outstanding creative research achievements. To date, there have only been two lawyers among the 50 recipients of this prestigious prize -  Dietrich André Loeber in 1995 and Tālavs Jundzis in 2016.
