Representing the University of Latvia Faculty of Law were Kārlis Bode in the role of the applicant, Ņikita Paņins as the defendant, and Katrīna Rūmniece-Pakule as the representative of the European Commission, while Paula Vasariete served as the Advocate General. The team was coached by Associate Professor Kristīne Dupate from the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia.
The competition brought together teams from universities across Europe and the United States. The University of Latvia Faculty of Law team proudly represented Latvia and gained valuable experience competing with other students and young professionals specialising in European Union law.
This year’s case involved several complex and topical issues of EU law, including the direct horizontal application of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, data protection rights, particularly damage caused by the unlawful use of sensitive personal data, and the free movement of capital between the EU and third countries in situations where a third country finances a collective action before a Member State court.
In Budapest, the University of Latvia team competed against students from Belgium, the Netherlands, France and the United States. The competition was highly competitive and, unlike many other international moot courts, success largely depended on the teams’ ability to present complex legal issues to the judges in a clear, precise and persuasive manner. The regional final was won by the team from the KU Leuven (Belgium) with an outstanding performance.
During the preparation process, the team was supported by several guest coaches. The team expresses sincere gratitude to Anete Gregersone, Ērika Gribonika, Rainer Svok, Viktorija Soņeca, Ieva Hūna, Reinis Ivanovs, Edijs Bierands and Edvards Ričards Slavinskis for their time, support and valuable advice.
The University of Latvia Faculty of Law team evaluates its performance positively and is sincerely grateful to the Faculty for the opportunity to participate in the competition. The team would like to extend special thanks to their coach Kristīne Dupate and guest coach Anete Gregersone for their dedication and hard work in preparing the team.
