During the preliminary rounds, the Latvian team successfully competed against strong national teams from Greece, Romania, the Netherlands, and Austria. Among 29 teams representing some of Europe’s strongest universities, our students achieved outstanding results both in the overall rankings and in individual rounds:
- 1st place as Applicants in the oral pleadings in The Hague;
- 1st place as Respondents in the oral pleadings in The Hague;
- 2nd place in the overall Applicants’ ranking;
- 3rd place in the overall Respondents’ ranking.
The outstanding performance and high level of legal expertise demonstrated in The Hague were achieved by third-year students of the Bachelor’s study programme “Law”, Kristīne Prohorova and Mona Upeniece, as well as Marta Rozenberga, a third-year student of the Bachelor’s study programme “Pre-Trial Investigation” at the UL Faculty of Law.
“Half the journey towards outstanding results is having a great coach!” the team members emphasise. Behind this success lies persistent, focused, and dedicated work, skilfully supervised and guided by the team’s coach. The UL Faculty of Law and the students therefore express their deepest and most sincere gratitude to Māris Lejnieks for his support and invaluable contribution.
During the preparation period, an indispensable role was played by Latvian legal professionals who acted as guest judges. Their constructive criticism, challenging questions, and professional advice helped the students further refine their advocacy and public speaking skills. The team extends its sincere thanks to Natālija Knipše, Rainers Svoks, Viktorija Gilberte, Alma Arro, Nils Pužulis, Gustavs Gailis, Dainis Pudelis, Roberts Gusts, Elīna Luīze Vītola, Gabriela Šantare, Jūlija Jerņeva, and Kristaps Tamužs.
The team also expresses its deepest gratitude to its cooperation partners, whose financial and moral support made full participation in this prestigious competition possible and enabled the names of Latvia and the University of Latvia to resonate confidently across Europe. About the competition: The Telders International Law Moot Court Competition is one of the most prestigious and significant competitions for law students in Europe. This year marked the 49th edition of the competition, bringing together 29 teams from 21 countries in The Hague. For the first time in the history of the competition, this year’s case, “Legal Consequences Arising from the Conduct and Policies of Gravenwald”, was based on a request by a specialised agency for an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice. The case addressed several highly topical issues in international law, including the Court’s discretion to decline to issue an advisory opinion, the immunity of intergovernmental organisations, terrorism, discrimination, and AI-based migration policies.
